Description:

An orange distress flag. Originally designed to send a daytime distress signal. Its black square and circle form an official maritime sign that a vessel or person needs assistance.

For the work, a salvaged orange distress flag is paired with weathered plywood and a railroad spike. I was drawn to the way the materials bring together two different systems of passage, one by water and one by land. What once supported and directed movement now remains as evidence of use and abandonment.

Description:

Break Water is a sculptural mixed media work exploring erosion, fracture, and the physical memory embedded within coastal materials. Built from reclaimed wood, rope, fabric, and layered painted surfaces, the piece moves between painting and object, allowing the structure itself to appear weathered, ruptured, and partially unearthed.

The central fissure functions simultaneously as landscape, wound, and architectural failure. Materials emerge from beneath the surface as if exposed through time, salt, pressure, and collapse. Soft atmospheric whites and grays contrast with the raw physicality of the embedded elements, creating tension between stillness and destruction.

Part of an ongoing body of work rooted in Coastal Ruinism, the piece examines how environments absorb history through erosion, instability, and structural breakdown.

Built through repeated sanding, covering, and reconstruction, the work exists between abstraction and fragmented landscape, where traces of structure and atmosphere partially emerge before dissolving back into the surface. Rope and industrial textures function as evidence of tension, labor, and collapse, transforming the painting into something that feels less constructed and more recovered over time.

“Recovery Line” exists between painting and object, using salvaged rope and layered surfaces to explore tension, erosion, and structural instability. The restrained composition is interrupted by a suspended dock line that introduces weight, pull, and the suggestion of failed connection. Through abrasion, layering, and reduction, the surface becomes quiet and weathered, holding traces of atmosphere and disappearance rather than direct imagery. The work reflects an ongoing interest in material memory, labor, and the fragile systems that hold structures together over time.
