Nat Love was inspired by the tension between lived experience and the mythology that grew around the American cowboy. Born into slavery and later becoming a cowboy, Love documented his own life in a 1907 autobiography filled with stories of cattle drives, frontier towns, danger, and reinvention, actively participating in the creation of his own legend.
Through layered paint, collage, fragmentation, and abrasion, I wanted the portrait to occupy the uncertain space between historical record and self-created mythology. The weathered surface allows Love’s image to emerge and disappear, reflecting the way individual lives are transformed as memory becomes story and story becomes history.
