An orange distress flag. Originally designed to send a daytime distress signal. Its black square and circle form an official maritime sign that a vessel or person needs assistance.
For the work, a salvaged orange distress flag is paired with weathered plywood and a railroad spike. I was drawn to the way the materials bring together two different systems of passage, one by water and one by land. What once supported and directed movement now remains as evidence of use and abandonment.

TOTALITY was inspired by the tension between isolation and disruption within vast landscapes. The burning structure positioned against an otherwise quiet and expansive environment creates a moment that feels both cinematic and emotionally unresolved. I’m interested in how landscapes can carry traces of conflict, memory, and instability while still maintaining a sense of stillness and beauty.
Through layered paint, collage, and abrasion, I wanted the surface to feel partially weathered and unstable, allowing the image to exist somewhere between memory, atmosphere, and psychological space rather than functioning as a literal location.

VOID is part of my ongoing IN / OUT OF RANGE series, exploring memory, absence, and the spaces left behind when people, places, and stories begin to fade. Inspired by weathered coastal settlements and remote landscapes along the Maine shoreline, the work combines paint, collage, and fragmented imagery to create a scene that exists between observation and recollection.
Dark structures and solitary figures emerge from a landscape dominated by light, atmosphere, and distance. The imagery remains intentionally unresolved, allowing the work to function as both place and memory.
I work in mixed media because memory is layered and imperfect. Photography provides traces of reality, while paint introduces atmosphere and ambiguity. Together they create a surface that feels discovered rather than constructed. I hope viewers experience quiet contemplation while reflecting on absence, isolation, and the traces that remain after a place has changed.

Inspired by weathered structures and coastal landscapes along the Maine shoreline, the work combines collage, paint, and fragmented imagery to create a scene suspended between presence and disappearance.
A solitary building sits within a landscape shaped as much by memory as by place. Fragments of text, marks, and atmospheric passages emerge and fade across the surface, suggesting histories that can no longer be fully recovered.
I use mixed media because it reflects the way memories accumulate, shift, and erode over time. Photography provides evidence of place, while paint introduces atmosphere and uncertainty.

CABIN FEVER was inspired by winter isolation, mountain architecture, and the emotional tension between shelter and collapse. The work draws from remote cabin structures, wildfire imagery, abandoned settlements, and fragmented memories of place, blending landscape with psychological atmosphere.
I wanted the piece to feel suspended between beauty and unease. The fire becomes both destruction and light, while the surrounding snow-covered landscape creates a quiet sense of distance and stillness. Viewers are invited to reflect on themes of survival, memory, and emotional isolation within environments that feel both familiar and unstable.
The mixed media approach allows the surface to feel weathered and layered over time. By combining collage, abrasion, painterly washes, gestural mark-making, and architectural fragments, the work moves between abstraction and landscape while reinforcing ideas of erosion, fragmentation, and atmosphere central to the OUT OF RANGE series.

Lost Bearing explores the changing character of the New England coastline, where working waterfronts, navigation systems, and industrial structures gradually disappear beneath erosion, weather, and time. Rather than documenting a specific location, the work combines painting with salvaged maritime materials to create a landscape that feels both familiar and uncertain.
Layers of acrylic, texture, weathered surfaces, rust, and found objects are built into the composition so that the painting functions as both image and artifact. The embedded materials are not decorative additions; they serve as physical evidence of labor, navigation, and coastal life, carrying traces of the environments from which they came. The work reflects an ongoing interest in how places become archives, preserving the physical evidence of human activity long after their original purpose has faded.

Description:
Break Water is a sculptural mixed media work exploring erosion, fracture, and the physical memory embedded within coastal materials. Built from reclaimed wood, rope, fabric, and layered painted surfaces, the piece moves between painting and object, allowing the structure itself to appear weathered, ruptured, and partially unearthed.
The central fissure functions simultaneously as landscape, wound, and architectural failure. Materials emerge from beneath the surface as if exposed through time, salt, pressure, and collapse. Soft atmospheric whites and grays contrast with the raw physicality of the embedded elements, creating tension between stillness and destruction.
Part of an ongoing body of work rooted in Coastal Ruinism, the piece examines how environments absorb history through erosion, instability, and structural breakdown.
