Description:
CATCH / RELEASE was inspired by the opposing actions embedded within tools of capture. A salvaged fishing net is bound to a weathered buoy, bringing together an object designed to contain with one designed to remain visible and afloat.
I’m interested in the histories of labor that remain embedded in worn materials after their usefulness has ended. Here, the collapsed net can no longer effectively catch and the buoy no longer marks a position in the water. Bound together, they become evidence of a system that has stopped functioning as intended. The sculpture exists between containment and escape, usefulness and obsolescence, asking what remains after an object has been released from its original purpose.
