Nat Love was inspired by the tension between lived experience and the mythology that grew around the American cowboy. Born into slavery and later becoming a cowboy, Love documented his own life in a 1907 autobiography filled with stories of cattle drives, frontier towns, danger, and reinvention, actively participating in the creation of his own legend.
Through layered paint, collage, fragmentation, and abrasion, I wanted the portrait to occupy the uncertain space between historical record and self-created mythology. The weathered surface allows Love’s image to emerge and disappear, reflecting the way individual lives are transformed as memory becomes story and story becomes history.

Bill Pickett was inspired by the complicated relationship between recognition and erasure within the mythology of the American West. Pickett became one of the most celebrated Black cowboys of his era, developing the rodeo technique known as bulldogging and performing internationally, yet his presence remains far less familiar than the fictionalized cowboys who came to define the West in popular culture.
Through layered paint, collage, fragmentation, and abrasion, I wanted the surface to feel as though Pickett’s image has been recovered from a larger history that has partially obscured him. The portrait exists somewhere between documentation and myth, asking who is remembered, who becomes an icon, and who is left at the edges of the stories we inherit.

CABIN FEVER was inspired by winter isolation, mountain architecture, and the emotional tension between shelter and collapse. The work draws from remote cabin structures, wildfire imagery, abandoned settlements, and fragmented memories of place, blending landscape with psychological atmosphere.
I wanted the piece to feel suspended between beauty and unease. The fire becomes both destruction and light, while the surrounding snow-covered landscape creates a quiet sense of distance and stillness. Viewers are invited to reflect on themes of survival, memory, and emotional isolation within environments that feel both familiar and unstable.
The mixed media approach allows the surface to feel weathered and layered over time. By combining collage, abrasion, painterly washes, gestural mark-making, and architectural fragments, the work moves between abstraction and landscape while reinforcing ideas of erosion, fragmentation, and atmosphere central to the OUT OF RANGE series.

ECHOES is part of my ongoing OUT OF RANGE series, which explores memory, distance, and the traces people leave behind. Inspired by weathered structures and coastal landscapes along the Maine shoreline, the work combines collage, paint, and fragmented imagery to create a scene suspended between presence and disappearance.
A solitary building sits within a landscape shaped as much by memory as by place. Fragments of text, marks, and atmospheric passages emerge and fade across the surface, suggesting histories that can no longer be fully recovered.
I use mixed media because it reflects the way memories accumulate, shift, and erode over time. Photography provides evidence of place, while paint introduces atmosphere and uncertainty.

VOID is part of my ongoing IN / OUT OF RANGE series, exploring memory, absence, and the spaces left behind when people, places, and stories begin to fade. Inspired by weathered coastal settlements and remote landscapes along the Maine shoreline, the work combines paint, collage, and fragmented imagery to create a scene that exists between observation and recollection.
Dark structures and solitary figures emerge from a landscape dominated by light, atmosphere, and distance. The imagery remains intentionally unresolved, allowing the work to function as both place and memory.
I work in mixed media because memory is layered and imperfect. Photography provides traces of reality, while paint introduces atmosphere and ambiguity. Together they create a surface that feels discovered rather than constructed. I hope viewers experience quiet contemplation while reflecting on absence, isolation, and the traces that remain after a place has changed.
