Description:

Bell Weather was inspired by the systems we create to warn ourselves of approaching danger. A salvaged factory bell, weathered signal cloth, rope, and wood are assembled into an object that suggests a warning device whose original instructions have been lost.

I’m interested in the moment when a signal remains visible but its meaning becomes uncertain. The bell can still sound and the red fabric still suggests urgency, yet neither provides clear direction. Suspended between alarm, artifact, and improvised communication, the sculpture considers what happens when the mechanisms intended to warn us survive longer than our ability to understand or respond to them.

Description:

CATCH / RELEASE was inspired by the opposing actions embedded within tools of capture. A salvaged fishing net is bound to a weathered buoy, bringing together an object designed to contain with one designed to remain visible and afloat.

I’m interested in the histories of labor that remain embedded in worn materials after their usefulness has ended. Here, the collapsed net can no longer effectively catch and the buoy no longer marks a position in the water. Bound together, they become evidence of a system that has stopped functioning as intended. The sculpture exists between containment and escape, usefulness and obsolescence, asking what remains after an object has been released from its original purpose.

An orange distress flag. Originally designed to send a daytime distress signal. Its black square and circle form an official maritime sign that a vessel or person needs assistance.

For the work, a salvaged orange distress flag is paired with weathered plywood and a railroad spike. I was drawn to the way the materials bring together two different systems of passage, one by water and one by land. What once supported and directed movement now remains as evidence of use and abandonment.
